We drove into The Wash last night (not literally, we would have got wet) at local midnight in the hope of seeing the potentially spectacular Camelopardalids meteor shower. We were armed with folding camping beds for comfort, plus quilts as temperatures can drop quite cold around there. Skies were 'clear enough', but not as clear as they usually are, for instance the Milky Way was not visible due to slight sea mist. After looking up to the skies for about half an hour we saw only one meteor and decided to give up and go home. Here's what The Guardian newspaper had to say about the Camelopardalids. "The analyses indicate that the resulting meteor shower should peak between 07:33 and 08:49 BST on that morning (May 24th) with rates of about 100-400 meteors per hour, though a storm-force display of more than 1,000 per hour cannot be ruled out. Since we have no data on the comet's activity a century ago, the estimate is uncertain and, indeed, there may be nothing to see after all." Other articles suggested that North America was the prime place to see the Camelopardalids. Maybe it will be worth checking again tonight, knowing that these predictions can sometimes be as much as a day out. I recorded 87.6 overnight and after seeing the resulting wav file this morning I can say that there were a lot of radio meteors. Radio Impuls 87.6 has appeared twice while I have been typing this. Good DX! John Jinak bych dodal, že pokud nevíte o jaký souhvězdí jde, tak vyjděte z obvyklých znalostí: Camelky cigarety znáte, že, no a pivo Pardál taky... takže když skřížíte velblouda s pardálem....
