Digi-TV started in Sweden 1999 and then there were no plans to replace the analogue tv-net. But suddenly some economic people calculated it's cheaper to send digi-tv then analogue. Well, let's make a bunch of channels you can only see if you use a box and a smartcard. But to fool you we offer you some free channels also that must be free. Same economic persons launched DAB nation wide in 1995 but no one listened to it, no one knew what it was and to pay 5000-6000SEK for a receiver to listen to the same channels you can listen analouge - not of any interesse. DAB closed down nation wide after a year or two and is now stand-by except of four major towns. The interesse for digi-tv was in the beginning completley cold. The channel provider got huge economical problems.
To finance a "failure" they "forced" people to buy set-up boxes in a suspect way - close down the analgoue net piece by piece during a period of a couple of years. And the cause was of course economical and with digi-tv everything would be better - better picture, better sound, more and better services etc. Then people are forced to buy set-up boxes, often more the one per household to be able to watch TV in the future. You can watch the free channels but if you want to have more, you have to pay for a package of channels. No one has asked you if you really want these channels. Many of the channels are completley rubbish! If I want to have "a la carte" for a recued cost then it's not possible. If I would like to have norweigian, danish or finnish channels you can only get them via digi cabel-tv. There is enough space to put in tv-channels from our neighbour countires in an own MUX but the channel providers don't earn any money on this. It's technicaly possible and just sign an agreement with the tv-companies in respective country.
Now the analogue net is closed down forever and I don't now if there is any return back. Before you could watch a weak analogue signal but now you only have a signal or no signal and between mosaic. Mosiac is hardly enjoyable to watch. I remember when I was on vaccation with caravan in mid-Finland for some years ago. I don't understand a word Finnish and I wasn't so fond of the swedish speaking programs in YLE: I could receive a noisy SVT2 signal but now that'd impossible.
For some 10 years ago Teracom (ex. Televerket Radio - Swedish Telecom Board - Radio) lowered the effect on the TV-transmitters from approx 1000kW to 800kW with the motivation: New TV-sets are better in the reception now then in the past. Bullshit! Home built tv-sets from the 50's are in some cases more sensitve then newer. I don't now if it was just strikes of luck but when I read old technical magazines from mid 50's, people reports reception of Italian, Czech, Russian, Danish, Brittish and in some rare cases also American stations. One may though rescpet sunspot maximum during this period. Was it better in the past?
Best Regards
Chris
